The Truth About Methylene Blue Benefits Risks My Results
Methylene blue keeps coming up. Apparently over 3,000 people search my name plus methylene blue every month, and I've never made a video on it. So today I'm fixing that with a full breakdown of what it does, who should use it, and how I dose it.
A Quick History
Methylene blue was first used medically in the late 19th century to treat malaria. Since then it's been used across medical, scientific, and industrial applications. It's water soluble, gives you a blue solution, and functions as both an electron donor and acceptor.
That last part matters more than it sounds. Let's break down what it actually does in the body.
How It Works
Mitochondrial enhancement. Methylene blue acts as an alternative electron carrier in the electron transport chain. In plain English, it helps your body make more ATP (energy). It can bypass complex 1 and 3 deficiencies and counteract mitochondrial dysfunction, which makes it useful for neurodegenerative conditions.
Antioxidant and redox cycling. It neutralizes free radicals and reduces oxidative stress. It cycles between oxidized and reduced states, helping maintain cellular redox balance.
Nitric oxide modulation. It inhibits excessive nitric oxide production. This is why it's used in septic shock to counteract low blood pressure. Some people say you shouldn't combine methylene blue with nitric oxide supplements. I've used both together and never noticed anything bad, but the canceling effect is at least worth thinking about.
Weak MAOA inhibitor. It increases serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Mood-enhancing potential, but this is also where the SSRI warning comes in (more on that below).
Neuroprotection. Increases cerebral blood flow and oxygen consumption in the brain. Reduces neuroinflammation and misfolded protein accumulation, which is what we see in Alzheimer's patients.
What It's Good For
Neurodegenerative disease. Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and MS all show potential applications. It prevents tau aggregation, supports dopaminergic neurons, and may have myelin-protective effects.
Mental health. Used off-label for depression, bipolar, and anxiety. For some people, this could be a better path than an SSRI. Just don't combine the two.
Cognitive enhancement. Better memory, focus, and learning by improving oxygen metabolism in the brain. Also protects against age-related cognitive decline.
Antimicrobial and anti-parasitic. Kills bacteria, fungi, and viruses by increasing oxidative stress in pathogens. Works synergistically with antibiotics. A lot of people with mold issues or chronic infections may be feeling better on methylene blue without realizing why.
Cardiovascular. Used in septic shock to restore blood pressure. May have cardio-protective effects through mitochondrial support.
Anti-aging and longevity. I'd put it in the same category as SLU-PP-332, MOTS-c, and SS-31. All mitochondrial players. Methylene blue belongs right alongside them.
Skin and wound healing. Antimicrobial properties plus increased collagen production and fibroblast activity. It's actually showing up in anti-aging skincare formulations.
Eye health. Anecdotally, a lot of people report improved vision. It protects retinal cells from oxidative damage and may help with glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
Dosing
Low dose for cognitive benefits is around 5 to 20 mg per day.
For mitochondrial enhancement and neuroprotection, you're looking at 40 to 60 mg per day.
I'll be honest, I was doing 5 to 10 mg for a while and not feeling anything. Thanks to Alex Tarnava's work, I bumped up to 40 mg and actually noticed it. Just yesterday I was tired in the afternoon, took 40 mg, and within an hour my brain came back online. Not jittery. Just clear. Then I had a great training session.
Start low, go slow. Some people feel weird at higher doses depending on their body. Titrate up if you're tolerating it well.
How to Take It
Oral or sublingual works. IV is used in clinical settings but you don't need that. Topical for wound healing.
I get mine off Amazon (link in my Amazon storefront in the description). The liquid version is way more affordable than capsules and the dosing is more flexible.
Stacking
Pairs nicely with CoQ10 and alpha-lipoic acid for mitochondrial support. L-carnitine and PQQ for ATP production. NMN, NAD+ precursors, and 5-amino-1MQ for longevity.
If you're running it with SLU-PP-332, MOTS-c, or SS-31 at higher doses, just be aware of mitochondrial overload. I've used them together fine, but I'm conscious about not stacking everything at maxed-out doses. Watch my mitochondrial overload video if you haven't.
Side Effects and Risks
Your urine will turn blue or green. If your pee was yellow, now it's green. Yellow plus blue.
Some people get mild nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, or headaches. Photosensitivity at higher doses. I've never experienced any of that other than the blue tongue and pee.
The real risks:
Do not combine with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or MDMA. Serotonin syndrome is real. Confusion, hyperthermia, agitation, muscle rigidity. Stay away.
I also won't mix methylene blue with tesofensine. Tesofensine is an SNDRI, weaker than most SSRIs, but I'm not testing that combo on myself. Use them independently.
G6PD deficiency. Methylene blue can trigger hemolysis in people with this genetic condition. Avoid.
Doses over 5 mg/kg can cause excessive oxidative stress. I'm about 100 kg, so 500 mg would be way too much for me. That's roughly 10x what I'd even call a high dose.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women. Avoid. We don't have the data.
Who Should Use It
- People with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or MS
- Biohackers wanting cognitive enhancement (that's me)
- Chronic fatigue or mitochondrial dysfunction (pair with MOTS-c, SS-31, or SLU)
- Recovery from brain injury or concussion
- Athletes in contact sports
- Anyone needing antimicrobial, antifungal, or anti-parasitic support
Who Should Avoid It
- Anyone on SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs (and I'd add tesofensine to this)
- G6PD deficiency
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Severe cardiovascular conditions
My Take
Methylene blue is a solid mitochondrial player and worth testing if you fit the profile. It's not as dramatic as SLU-PP-332 for me, where you really feel the difference after cycling off and back on. But there's still a real effect, especially at the 40 to 60 mg range. For people with significant mitochondrial dysfunction, this could be a major piece of the puzzle. Thumbs up stamp of approval. Just respect the contraindications, especially the SSRI warning.

Hey everybody, this is Hunter Williams. I hope you're doing amazing wherever you are in the world. Today is going to be the methylene blue video. So funny story about doing this video, um, in my planning for the week. Um, well, first I'll say this. Thank you to you guys because I have such an amazing audience now. As I am brainstorming and planning my content, maybe I do a video about this one day if there's enough other creators or whatever of like how they do stuff. But I kind of pull from a bunch of different sources. So I obviously pull the video topic suggestions.
I pull just from feedback we get in our communities and obviously from people that I've coached or I'm coaching. And then also too, I use a tool called vidIQ. There's a lot of other softwares out there like this Kind of give you insights into keywords. So for instance, I wanted to make a video on BPC-157. It would give me an insight like what are people searching for on bpc-137? Promises will make sense. And so I was brainstorming videos and I kind of like, usually I have a ton of video ideas and it's like I don't have enough time in the day to like get
to all the video topics I want. And I just kind of like hit like a little bit of a creative wall, which happens from time to time, to all of us. And, I was like, okay, well, let me go in the keyword thing and just see like what I can find that's out there that, you know, like might be a good term. I searching, and I'm searching my name because a lot of people will put in like my, name plus a certain term, but actually I have people that I coach tell me that they're like anytime I want to find info, just put it in, my like name and then like this certain peptide or whatever it is. And I was doing that and I looking through like the predictive like, okay, what are people searching?
Um, at the risk of sounding like a total douchebag, cause I know that might seem to some people, um, like what do people are searching plus my name, you know? So like I knew what like people were out there like searching for. And, I did that. One of the more common ones that like kept popping up was Hunter Williams, Methylene Blue. I don't think I've made a video about it before, even on my old channel. And I saw that there was like 3,700 searches per month for Hunter Williams, Methylene Blue.
I was destined to make a video about Methylene Blue because every single month there's over 3,000 people that are searching for my video on it, to which I don't have any. So shout out to you guys for helping me with stuff like that, even if it was not your intent for searching from my name around things. Anyway, long backstory, but I actually intended to do a Video on Methylened Blue. Previously, up until the last couple of months, I didn't understand as well and understand what it's doing. And I didn't have like, I had used it on and off in the past and I don't like understand the dosing as much. Um, and you know, it is a little bit more of a convoluted thing.
So hopefully this video, um, is in my comprehensive overview style. Uh, but it makes more sense as to like how to use it, what it's for, or what is doing when and when not to. blue Video and learn everything at least I know and I hope to know about it All right. I am Hunter Williams and today is my comprehensive overview on methylene blue. So let's look at the history just to give us context and framework. It actually was first medically used in late 19th century, not too long after its discovery or synthesis to treat malaria.
It's been used extensively for medical, scientific and industrial purposes. So it's water soluble, giving it a blue solution and it functions as an electron donor and acceptor. We're going to go into today what that really means and why does it even matter. All these big words that people say on podcasts and interviews and videos all the time. What do they actually mean? And why does it matter for my life living my day to day life to where I can get anything done and just be a happy, loving, enjoyable human. So let's look at the mechanisms.
When we look at this electron carrier and mitochondrial enhancement, what does that mean? So it acts as an alternative electron-carrier in the electron transport chain. So, it enhances ATP production, which is just energy for the layman. It enhances the ATP by bypassing complex 1 and 3 deficiencies. And it also helps counteract mitochondrial dysfunction, making it useful for neurodegenerative diseases. So electron carrier in the electron transport chain just means it helps us with energy.
That's it. Doesn't have to be too crazy. It also acts as an antioxidant and redox cycling. What does that mean? So redux potential allows methylene blue to neutralize free radicals, which reduces oxidative stress. So think of these free radicles as basically bad guys in our body, and they build up from the amount of stress from our environment. Now that could be toxins in the environment, it could physical stress that were put under, but when we create stress in the body, these things that are called free radicals build up.
So in its oxidized form, methylene blue accepts electrons and gets reduced to leukomethylene and then reversibly cycles between oxidize and reduce states, maintaining cellular redox balance. Um, we also have this nitric oxide modulation, so it inhibits excessive nitrous oxide production, which reduces vasodilation. And it's also used in septic shock to counteract nitrate oxide induced low blood pressure. So, um, there is, I'm not going to go off on a complete tangent here. Um. But there. Is a school of thought that like, you shouldn't use methylene blue.
If you're taking nitro oxide supplements I have used. both together and I don't notice anything bad, but, um, you know, I have heard people say that in the baths. I think if anything, like we talked about in septic shock, it's used to counteract nitric oxide induced low blood pressure. Um, You know it, they, just may have like a canceling out effect, so. Yeah, but obviously I don't know that anyone in depth has really studied that. And if they have, please send it my way because I'd love to read more about it.
But it also acts as a MAOA inhibitor, which stands for monoamine oxidase inhibition. So it increases serotonin dopamine and norepinephrine. It is a weak inhibitors. but an inhibitor nonetheless, and it may provide mood enhancing effects, but it can interact with SSRIs, which lead to serotonin syndrome. I'll talk about that a little bit later. Basically, if you were on an SSI, do not take methylene blue. It would not be advisable to do so. Um, I would say it not would be advisedable. To start an S SRI, But if your taking it, um, it could create some kind of weird effects.
So just stay away. Or at least until that SSR is out of your system. And then when we look at it from a neuroprotective and cognitive enhancement standpoint, it does increase cerebral blood flow to the brain and oxygen consumption, and also reduces neuroinflammation and misfolded protein accumulation, which really is just what we are seeing in people with Alzheimer's. So there's this is that side of it too. What does that lead us to have at least from an therapeutic standpoint? So one, we've got neurodegenerative disease applications.
It's pretty cool because these are pretty wide ranging in terms of the benefits, but Alzheimer disease, again, it prevents that tau aggregation and misfolding and improves mitochondrial function. Parkinson's disease enhances ATP production, prevents oxidative stress and may reduce dopaminergic neuron loss, which is very prevalent in Parkinson disease. And then we've got multiple sclerosis, so potential myelin protective and neuroinflammatory reduction effects. Mental health applications. It's been used off label for depression, bipolar, and anxiety. Again, when we talk about that modulation of the neurotransmitter levels, That's where we're going to see it really shine for some of those more conditions.
So I would say if those are issues you're dealing with, Methylene blue to me is a better alternative than SSRI. Um, you know, again, enhances dopamine and serotonin improving mood. And it again is, uh, potential alternative to SSR, SSRIS, but caution to the seratonin syndrome risk. If you're using it alongside those, um, also to, it's going to improve memory focus and learning ability by increasing oxygen metabolism specifically in the brain. It's gonna protect against age-related cognitive decline and then also enhance mitochondrial ATP production in And then lastly,
it's got antimicrobial and anti-parasitic properties. So it was used against malaria or it is used it against Malaria. It was one of the first medical applications. And there's a broad spectrum antimikrobio effects. so it kills bacteria, fungi, and viruses by increasing oxidative stress and pathogens. it also has synergistic effect with antibiotics. that also may help counteract antibiotics resistance. So don't recommend an antibiotic, but if you do, you know, that's just got me thinking, I wonder what it would do with LL 37. I don' think I've ever used them in tandem. Hmm. Interesting thought.
Maybe I'll report back on that. But, um, see, even sometimes in these videos, just have random thoughts that come to me that could be good or they could, be worthless. Anyway, it does have that side of things. You know if, if your dealing with any of those things like parasites or even like, I don't know. It's starting to, I guess, be more commonly understood that like several people have mold in them. And when we look at like fungi or fungi, however you pronounce it, this could be something that could really powerful for that.
So I think a lot of people too, they like take methylene blue. We don t know necessarily like what it's doing, but a of these people that suffer with things like that, it s probably improving their symptoms. What are some of the therapeutic benefits? So when we look at the cardiovascular system, it's using septic shock again to restore blood pressure by inhibiting excessive nitric oxide. It may have cardio protective effects because of what it is doing to our mitochondrial health. Again, I would say I'd classify this if I'm just thinking as a broad category as mitochondria player, because ultimately that's what its doing is enhancing
mitochondrial function. When we look at anti-aging and longevity, mitochondria health obviously plays a huge role. That's why we talk about SLU, MOTC, SS31. Methylene blue is right there alongside of these. It also reduces cellular senescence and oxidative stress and may enhance autophagy and mitophage and also anti C word potential So it selectively targets those cells that may be afflicted in their mitochondria, disrupting the ATP production, and it generates reactive oxygen species to kill those sells.
And then it also enhances the effects of chemo and radiation, which I wouldn't recommend you do anyway. But it's pretty cool, too. I haven't used this personally, thankfully, because I don't need to. We look at skin health and wound healing due to the antimicrobial properties. It could help with that. It also increases collagen production and fibroblast activity, and it's used in anti-aging skincare formulations. And then also for eye health, so it protects retinal cells from oxidative damage. I do know, anecdotally speaking at least, there have been a lot of people that have improved their vision using methylene blue.
So, you know people always want to know what's the peptide for vision. This could be a really, really good one to add in. And then also for the potential treatment of glaucoma and, um, age related macular degeneration. So, uh, pretty cool. It's funny because I did a video on like overloading your mitochondria and funny enough at a low dose, methylene blue kind of acts like an antioxidant
at higher dose and actually can, like we were talking about, generate reactive oxygen species that could potentially heal the C word like what you're talking. But it could be something that we have to account for and make sure that were not overloaded on the body. Um, so when we look at a low dose, it's going to be closer to five to 20 milligrams per day for low-dose cognitive benefits. And then we looked at mitochondrial enhancement, neuroprotection. It's gonna be close to 40, 60 milligrams a day. Now you probably could go higher, but I don't, I wouldn't recommend starting off there because a lot of people, depending on your body and your genetic
predisposition and our current health or whatever, It might make you feel weird. So, you know, funny enough, that I was always doing like five, 10 milligrams. Like I feel anything, which makes sense because very optimized and hormonally optimized. I'm using peptides and all this thing. But thanks to the work of Alex Kickle, I learned it was like, oh, okay, it actually had heard this before, but he kind of like shed some light on it. And I was, like that makes sense. You go up to like 40 to 60 milligrams per day. and I will say that's where I did notice a difference of feeling good and feeling it, actually just yesterday I kind feeling really tired by the afternoon,
just because I've been under stress with work and everything. And, um, I'd had some like pain in my shoulder, nothing bad, but. Uh, it kind of kept me up at night and I didn't sleep well. And in the afternoon, like two o'clock, um, I took, you know, 40 milligrams of methylene blue. Then within an hour I was like, wow, so much better. Um, but not like in a jittery way. I just, my brain kind to turn back on, and then I went to the gym and had an amazing training session and it just felt really good. So, Um I would say start low and go slow. If you don't notice anything in lower doses, You can titrate up as long as you're feeling good, So as far as the administration can do oral,
sublingual, There is IV used in clinical settings, but you don't really need to get into that. And then topical for wound healing. I would like to do, talking about the wound-healing, I'd like knowing the information about collagen production to use it as a skincare topicle and see what works. Maybe it doesn't do anything, maybe it would, But I'll try. face for radio, as they say, but you know, you can do oral sublingual. The one that I get, I actually get from Amazon and it's actually in my Amazon storefront link.
So that should be in the description of this video. You can click on Amazon's store front and I've got the methylene blue. It should right there on that page of all the stuff that they have. You can definitely stack with other supplements. So CoQ10, alpha-lipoic acid is going to enhance the mitochondrial support. Injectable L-carnitine and PQQ is gonna increase ATP production. And also too, for longevity purposes, you can use it with NMN, NAD+, NADA plus precursors, 5-amino, 1MQ, any of those it's gonna pair really nicely with.
The only thing I would say is if you're doing the higher doses, just be cautious when we talk about Mozi SS 31 and SLU of overloading. And again, go back to that mitochondrial overload video that I did. Um, just be conscious of that. I'm not saying you can't use them because I've used them together. Uh, but I am conscious what I doing and I not, you know, putting myself into the ground so to speak. So, um, I just from a safety profile, There's a lot of information out there saying that like, oh, this is so dangerous, you shouldn't do it. I haven't experienced that.
So let's look at some of the side effects. Urine and stool discoloration, obviously it's going to make your P blue or green. You know, if your p is clear, it'll be blue. And then if you're P is yellow, will be green because yellow plus blue equals green But it could cause mild nausea or diarrhea, dizziness or headaches, or it can cause photosensitivity and higher doses. I haven't experienced any of those things other than the blue tongue and the Blue P, but it is what it. Like I mentioned, I think here's the two biggest things that I would say are like risk based on who you are.
Do not combine with SSRIs, SNRI's, MAOIs or MDMA. So again, we look at that serotonin syndrome risk. It could cause confusion, hypothermia, agitation, or muscle rigidity because of the seratonin Syndrome and also too I would say I have never mixed methylene blue with tesofensine. So teso-fensin is an SNDRI And it's a little bit weaker than some of them more popular SSRIs, but I've never mix them So I will not recommend doing that You know, maybe I'll do it one day just to test it and see what happens, but I prefer not to.
So I don't mix methylene blue with tesofencing. You can use them, you know independent of each other. I just wouldn't, mix them. And then there is people that have the G6PD deficiency, which is a genetic phenotype or genotype. Methylene blue can trigger hemolysis or red blood cell destruction in these people. Just be careful. In doses exceeding five milligram per kilogram, It can induce excessive oxidative distress like I talked about. So I'm about a hundred kilos. If I did 500 milligrams, that would be way, way too much, which is really like 10 times the dose that I would even consider a high dose for myself.
And then lastly, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, just avoid, because we don't really know what's going on or interacting there yet. So to kind of bring it around full circle, who should or shouldn't take Methylene Blue? Best candidates, people with neurodegenerative disease. So Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and MS. Definitely, like I would say, absolutely. Check the box. Biohackers looking for cognitive enhancement. I'm one of those. Yes, if you're looking at cognitive enhancements and want to improve brain function, definitely do it. Individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome or mitochondrial dysfunction.
Absolutely. And I'd even say that would be a case where I would say absolutely pair it with Mozi, absolutely paired with SS 31 to improve mitochondrial health or absolutely parrot with SLU. Um, people recovering from brain injuries or concussions definitely need those. I wouldn't even say like athletes. that are engaged in contact sports should be something that you're doing regularly. And I think, too, this is probably more people than we realize, but those in need of antimicrobial, antifungal, or anti-parasitic support is going to do well with. So those are going see the best use cases for that.
A lot of people probably follow under those. I'd say avoid it if you are on SSRIs, SNRI's, MAOIs, even maybe testofensin, I would go as far to say that, And then those with the G6PD deficiency, definitely stay away from it. And in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and then people with severe cardiovascular conditions, because of the nature of higher doses and oxidative stress, we could potentially do to exacerbate some of that inflammation. So let's look at some studies that I compiled lastly just to have.
It's not the time, but there is stuff out there. As far as anti-aging goes, There's one study that discussed its ability to enhance mitochondrial function and reduce oxidative stress, suggesting its potential in treating age-related conditions such as neurodegeneration and memory loss. So definitely therapeutic application there. We got antimicrobial applications. This study looked at its antim microbial properties and use in various other applications, and found it to be beneficial and cognitive enhancement.
So studies in rodents show that a low dose of methylene blue increases regional cerebral blood flow, oxygen extraction fraction and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen indicating potential cognitive benefits because again, what it's doing to bloodflow in the brain. Um, anti-cancer properties. So, um, a systemic review supports the use of methylene blue in photodynamic therapy against certain cancers, including colorectal tumors, carcinoma and melanoma, noting a decrease in tumor sizes and suffer studies. I can't give them my endorsement, but take with that what you will.
Then skin health and wound healing. Um, so it demonstrated potent reactive oxygen species, scavenging efficacy and culture to human skin, fibroblasts indicating its potential in delaying skin aging and promoting skin. And then also what would be cool if anybody has this methylene blue plus GHK in a serum that you rub on your face, would it make you look younger? I don't know. Probably wouldn't help me. but treatment of septic shock. So in patients with septal shock, it initiated within 24 hours, reduced the time to vasopressure discontinuation, increased vaso pressure free day at 28 days,
suggesting as an adjunct adjuct therapy for a septric shock if that's something you're dealing with. That is it for the slides. And that is the comprehensive overview of methylene blue. So I'm not too complex. I think it's pretty easy. You know, I would say in sourcing methylenine blue, it is harder to find some, like if you get the capsules or something, a lot of those are lower doses. Some might add up in terms of cost, but I just got the liquid version and it was like relatively affordable for what I got.
I definitely think it's something that most people, as long as you fall under those guidelines, could definitely test and see if you can benefit. I don't think there's going to be something like such a needle mover, like methylene blue versus SLU PP332, I notice SLUs. It's like, man, you take it, cycle it off of it for like eight weeks. and then came back on, I was like, okay, like there is something going on there. So methylene blues definitely like I would say less of an effect, but still an affect nonetheless. And I think, you know, for people that have pretty severe mitochondrial dysfunction, it could be a major player.
I give it the thumbs up stamp of approval. You definitely should check it out if it's something that's kind of up your alley of what you're looking for to do, well, I will close out.
